So: you’ve just hired a skip, and you’re well on your way to getting started with your clearance project. Whilst this is a great first step, the job isn’t done yet. You need to make sure you’re ready for your skip delivery so that the entire process can run as smoothly as possible. Want to know how to be prepared? Read on to find out.
Your site must be clear in preparation for delivery day. The skip cannot be placed if there are any obstacles in its way. Make sure you know exactly what size skip you’ve hired and allow for more than enough space to accommodate it.
Hazards may occur on the delivery route as well as at the placement area. Although you cannot always account for unexpected issues, you can notify your skip hire company of any permanent structures that could obstruct delivery. Skip lorries are very large and require around 3-4 metres of height clearance to deliver your skip safely. If you are aware of any low-hanging power lines or bridges, you should alert the company prior to delivery day.
Skip delivery tends to be a disruptive process. If you have narrow roads, your neighbours may not be able to pass by for the duration of the period that the skip is being delivered. The placing of the skip can be a noisy process too, and out of respect for your neighbours you should tell them in advance when they can expect there to be a disruption. This will allow them to plan ahead and make any necessary changes to their schedule, whilst also helping to maintain a good relationship with them.
Skip delivery requires the lorry to make manoeuvres that take up considerable space. You should ensure that the area is clear for both your skip and also for your lorry to move safely. If there are any particularly narrow roads or any other obstacles that will make the delivery process challenging, you should once again notify your skip hire company beforehand.
Choose a delivery area that is away from any manholes. Placing a skip on a manhole can have dire consequences: on top of damaging the manhole cover itself, the heavy weight of the skip can also cause flooding due to a backflow of rainwater or damage to the pipes. The longer the skip is left on the manhole, the more risk there is of serious damage.
It’s important to remember that not all waste is suitable for a skip - hazardous waste, for example, requires a different disposal process. For simplicity, use a company that offers both traditional skip hire and also hazardous waste management. Make sure to familiarise yourself with what items are restricted before your skip arrives so that you don’t put anything in it that you shouldn't. This could result in a fine if you don’t comply with the rules.
