Four Steps to Transform Your Attic
Henry Skip Hire • 19 May 2020
If you own a home with an attic, then lucky you! An attic or loft can add a large amount of desirable space to your property, but it’s easy for these areas to become overlooked and neglected. Many of us are guilty of using our attics as a dumping ground for old or little used items; think Christmas decorations, furniture we no longer have space for, or old childhood toys.
While room for storage is highly useful, it would be a shame to waste the potential that an attic space has, and it doesn’t take too much effort to transform it into a stylish, functional room in your home. If you’ve been thinking it’s time to transform your attic, see below for four easy steps to get started.
Clear the junk
It’s time to bite the bullet and have a thorough clear out of everything in your attic - sort items into what you want to keep, donate and throw away. Sentimental items aside, it’s time to be ruthless, so get rid of any furniture that’s beyond repair, or consider selling/donating that old sports equipment that’s not seen the light of day for years.
A fresh coat of paint
Once the attic is clear, you can sweep the floors, remove any cobwebs and wash the windows. A fresh coat of paint can brighten up your attic in an instant and choose light colours to give the illusion of a bigger, airier space. Add a coat of primer first for the best results; white primer gives a smooth, clean finish for you to paint on and makes paler colours ‘pop’.
Flooring
Most attics come with gorgeous wooden flooring, but it may be difficult to see its full potential if you haven’t used the space in years. Sanding the floor can reveal the fresh wood beneath and then you just need to add a fresh coat of varnish on top.
New lighting
Attics don’t have to be dark and dingy, so brighten things up with some new light fixtures, or add a skylight to really open up the room. Wall mounted lamps are suited to sloping roofs (in place of a central ceiling light), or add spotlights or strip lighting for maximum illumination.
