An overgrown garden can be quite the challenge to clear out, but if you wish to have a beautiful outdoor space to enjoy, it must be done. If you break everything down into steps, you’ll find it much simpler to manage and you’ll be able to finish it faster. However, you should certainly bring in some help if possible to make the task go faster.
There may be quite a bit of non-organic rubbish about, so pull it all out of the garden to throw away. This includes broken lawn furniture, rusted tools, and rubbish of all sorts. It may be helpful to hire a skip if you have too much to simply put out with the rubbish as usual.
Your hedges will look quite wild if they are overgrown, so trimming these should be high on the priority list. A quick trim will have the space looking much tidier immediately. It’s likely that the hedges will look a bit sparse after this, since they will need to be cut back quite a bit, but this is normal and can be managed with frequent trimming so the leaves grow back.
Which plants do you wish to keep? Often, overgrown gardens have some lovely plants that have simply thrived without the constant attention of a gardener and while they may need trimming, they can be kept. You may also notice other plants that are hidden but need extra love. Rose bushes, for example, may be tucked away in the weeds, but should be kept if you like them.
Once you have the plants you want to keep marked, it’s time to get rid of everything else. Ideally, you’ll dig the roots right out. This will help prevent them from coming back. All of this junk can be tossed into a skip and removed from the area.
The grass will be far too long for a lawn mower at this point, so you will need to use a strimmer to cut the grass down to size. Take it down to a few inches and then rake up all the dead and cut grass so it will allow the rest of the healthy grass to grow well. Throw away the clippings.
Now you can go ahead and reseed your lawn if it needs more grass, plant regular plants in the flower beds and add any other plants you wish. This is also a good time to place mulch if you plan to use it.
If you’re clearing an overgrown garden, you’ll need some help.
