You often hear of spring cleaning, but in reality there’s no ‘perfect’ season to declutter your home. If you feel like you’re being crowded by all the stuff you have in your house, it’s time to start getting rid of it. You’ll feel freer and lighter when it’s all said and done.
The simplest way to do this massive declutter without getting distracted in the middle or feeling too overwhelmed is to simply work on one room at a time. Pick a room that you want to begin in and start there. Don’t move on to the next space until you have completely decluttered it.
All the items in the room should be pulled out and sorted. This includes everything that is in cupboards and drawers. Pile it in the middle of the floor and then start going through it. You’ll quickly see that there are items you haven’t touched or even seen in years.
Divide everything into four piles. These are:
Keep: Obviously, items that you cannot part with should be in this pile. They will be going back on shelves once you finish with the declutter.
Sell: You can make money from many of the items you have stored away but haven’t used in years. Go ahead and sell them.
Donate: You may have some items that you don’t want and don’t wish to sell but are still useful. These can be donated.
Rubbish: You may be surprised at how much rubbish has accumulated over the years. Now is the perfect time to get rid of it.
These piles may be moved as needed. Donation items should be boxed up for transport and rubbish can be taken out at once.
Look around the room. Do you have any furniture that no longer suits your décor or that you dislike? It may be time to throw it away.
Once you’ve sorted everything and moved the items that will not stay out of the space, you can clean. This should be a deep clean to really help you feel like you’re moving forward. Wash everything, vacuum, and put all the items back.
Now you can go on to the next room and work your way through these steps again. Every room in the house, right down to the bathrooms, can be sorted out in this way and you’ll soon have a clutter free home!
