Decluttering your home can seem like a daunting task. Whether you’ve let clutter get on top of you over the last few months or you’ve simply got too many things for your space, there comes a time when everyone needs to have a little clear out. Decluttering your home can contribute to a calmer, more simple lifestyle and will free up room in your home too, helping to open up the space.
We understand trying to tackle a mountain of clutter can be overwhelming and intimidating, but the hardest part is always starting.
Below, we share our top tips for decluttering your home and creating a clean, clear space you’re proud of.
Declutter room by room
A house full of clutter is intimidating, but as soon as you start breaking down the task, it instantly becomes more manageable. Instead of tackling your whole house at once, it’s best to declutter room by room. We recommend starting with the most cluttered room in your home first. Again, this can seem daunting, but once you’ve sorted the worst room in your home, it’ll only get easier.
Get rid of items you haven’t used in the last year
If you find it hard to throw things away, you may find decluttering particularly difficult. Even items that aren’t meaningful or sentimental can be difficult to get rid of if they’ve been in your home for a while. If you’re struggling to work out whether you should keep or throw away an item, ask yourself these two crucial questions:
● Have I used this item in the last year?
● Will I use this item in the next six months?
If the answer is ‘no’ to either questions, it’s probably worth just getting rid of it. There’s no point hoarding things you don’t use or need!
Set up some folders
Let’s be honest, paperwork can get on top of all of us. If you don’t have anywhere to put your papers, it’s time to set up some folders. Firstly, you’ll need to work your way through all of the paperwork floating around your home. Remember to use a shredder when getting rid of important documents and paperwork. Then, create some folders with labels for your bills, important documents, insurance papers and other paperwork. Each time a bill or a bank statement comes through, put it in the correct folder instead of on the table!
Clear out your wardrobe and cupboards
Most of us only wear half of our wardrobe. Clothes that you never intend to wear could be taking up precious space in your home, which is why it’s important you don’t skip your wardrobe, cupboards and drawers when decluttering. Again, ask yourself the all-important question: have I worn this in the last year? If the answer is no, it’s time to get rid. Put all of your unwanted clothes into a big bag for charity - or, if you think you can make some extra cash, try selling them online or at a jumble sale.
